This book had been on my recommended list for a long time, but I usually only pick up a YA novel if comes highly recommended from a friend. I came across an advert offering the ebook of Uglies for download and also free. It was a great marketing tactic, because I am definitely buying the rest of the series and probably the other books that this author has written. Uglies was a wonderful book, set in a believable and well thought out world.Tally Youngblood, the protagonist, is not exactly the most likeable character that I have read, but her growth and awareness suck you in, and while might not make you love her, breeds respect. In its entirety the novel is well written, the story line is well laid and the characters possess a depth that is usually lacking in most young adult novels. I also appreciate that romantic entanglements were at a minimum, even though there could have been a lot more. The author focused on the plot and left the other side plots left up to the reader's imagination. I would recommend this book to teens and adults alike who enjoy sci-fi. It is a thought provoking book, with of course that main "beautiful" theme but also an underlying theme of government interference and conspiracy. I can't wait to read the second installment.
